On December 7, 2023, experts from the dry cleaning industry took part in the training course "Business models in the digital environment", a component of the DAISEC qualification programDigitalization Manager. This four-hour event provided an insight into the challenges and opportunities associated with the transition from traditional to digital business models.
The training began with a brief introduction to the basics of business models. In addition, the "Transformation Dilemma" by K. Frankenberger et al. (2020) was used to highlight the importance of carefully bridging the gap between the existing and the future model. The specific challenge is to maintain the profitability of the existing business while developing digital ecosystems.
In the practical part of the training course, the participants, led by Renata Latka and Michael Schnaider, examined the entire process of a specific case study, from initial customer contact to the successful completion of an order. This analysis was later transferred by the participants to the specific needs of the dry cleaning industry. Through practical work on examples, a Business Model Canvas (BMC) was created, which gave the participants a comprehensive overview of their existing situation. In addition, dependencies within the processes were recognized and all participants gained a uniform understanding of the BMC. The intensive collaboration in small groups enabled the participants to deepen their knowledge and gain practical insights.
Finally, the participants received instructions on how to create a digitalization guide with the help of predefined guiding questions. This guide serves both as an orientation aid and as concrete instructions for the gradual transformation of their existing business models into digital business models. In addition to important theoretical principles, the participants were provided with specific action aids for the challenges of digital transformation in the textile cleaning industry.
